Intonation: Is It Really Important?

To communicate in English, all you need is good grammar and vocabulary, right? Wrong! It's not just what you say, but how you also say it. Intonation is a key component to effective communication.

Before I explain about intonation and provide some tips, I must say the following: Your goal shouldn't be to sound like a native English speaker. It's not especially important because so many non-native English speakers communicate effectively in English. Arnold Schwarzenegger is a good example. He still has his Austrian accent, but he is completely fluent in English. He can make himself understood easily, and that is most important. He expresses himself perfectly.

Movies as a Study Tool

According to a recent article in the Japan Times, Japanese movie audiences no longer like subtitles with foreign movies. As a result, more and more movies are dubbed, which means American actors speak with Japanese voices. In fact, many moviegoers complain about subtitles and say they are troublesome to read.

In the past, most of the dubbed movies were for children. After all, kids could not read the kanji characters. For example, almost all Japanese movie theaters showed Toy Story 3 in a dubbed version.

Japanese Students: Shy Perfectionists?

On September 23, 2010, the Japan Times had an interesting interview with Kae Minami. She translates and teaches Japanese to foreigners in Japan, as well as English to Japanese students.

About Japanese people who learn English, Ms. Minami says: "If you are a shy perfectionist, communicating might be tough. That's how many Japanese are, and that's why they can't speak English. They are obsessed with detail."
